Gum Surgery Post-Op Instructions

Rest

  • Take it easy for the rest of the day. Avoid strenuous activities to minimize bleeding and swelling.

Bleeding

  • Some minor bleeding is normal. If bleeding occurs, apply pressure with a clean gauze pad for 20-30 minutes. If bleeding persists, contact your dentist.

Pain Management

  • You may experience some discomfort. Take the pain relief medication as prescribed by your dentist. If over-the-counter medication is suggested, follow the dosage instructions carefully.

Swelling

  • Use an ice pack on the outside of your cheek in the treated area (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) to reduce swelling for the first 24 hours.

Oral Hygiene

  • Keep your mouth clean to aid healing. Brush gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush, avoiding the surgical sites.
  • If you do not have high blood pressure, begin gently rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater (1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water) starting 24 hours after the extraction and after meals for a few days to ensure oral hygiene. Only hold the solution in the affected area of your mouth for 10-15 seconds, then gently spit it out.
  • If you have high blood pressure, your dentist may recommend a prescribed antimicrobial mouthwash. Follow the specific instructions provided by your dentist for its use to maintain oral health.

Diet

  •  Stick to a soft diet. Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or hard foods that could irritate the treated area. Stay hydrated with plenty of fluids, but do not use a straw as this can dislodge the blood clot.

Avoid Smoking

  • Avoid smoking for at least 48-72 hours to aid healing. Smoking during the healing process can impede recovery and increase the risk of complications.

Sutures

If sutures were placed and they are not the self-dissolving type, you’ll need to return to have them removed. Your dentist will tell you when.

  • Follow-Up: Keep your follow-up appointment to ensure proper healing and to address any concerns.

Note: If you experience excessive bleeding, severe pain, prolonged swelling, or any signs of infection (such as fever or foul taste), contact your dentist immediately.

Following these instructions will help ensure a smooth recovery after your gingivectomy.
